Louis Vuitton Collaborations

Posted on August 27th, 2008 by Fashion Juice (Admin) | Leave a Comment »

We know how successful the collaborations of Louis Vuitton had been with artists such as Takashi Murakami and Richard Prince. Think water color speedy! Now you know what I’m talking about. Now we know Marc Jacobs is the brain between these collaborations. And what could probably be the last collaboration as of the moment is with Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons. Rei is a Japanese female designer who said that you can see her wearing a no-name black tote. She has resisted grabbing a Louis Vuitton and so it’s quite interesting to see someone design a luxurious bag who doesn’t want to spend on one. However, because of this collaboration, she said that she’ll be getting one soon.

Any how, Louis Vuitton’s 40th anniversary is marked by the release of this collection. The bags designed by Rei Kawakubo was put on sale August 27th at a pop up shop in Tokyo. Below are the pictures. So do we like it? I’m sorry but we don’t. And I think Marc Jacobs wants to say that he’s not happy either. He said that this is the only collection where he wasn’t involve in the design. He also said that it’s getting out of control. This is what he has to say.

“I’ve kind of warned everybody up there that I think they’ve gotten a little too into this idea which, I mean, is great,” Jacobs said. “I’m glad that everybody gets behind it, but what they don’t realize is that I do it at a pace that maintains the brand’s integrity and seems really right, and I think that sometimes everybody loves a good idea so much that they kind of go too far and it kind of kills it.”

About the designer

What began as a side business making costumes for styling assignments in Tokyo in the late sixties has morphed into a $150 million fashion empire with over 200 franchises around the globe. With rustic denim womenswear inspired by Japanese peasantry, Rei Kawakubo set up over 100 Comme des Garçons (French for “like some boys”) shops across Japan in the seventies. Then, in 1981, she brought her first collection to Paris. Bathed in black, it featured strong but conflated silhouettes—in crumbled silk, scrubbed cottons, and boiled wools—that honored provocation over fit. The mystery (and the austerity) has continued with Kawakubo’s recent jones for temporary “guerilla” stores, not to mention the work of her protégé Junya Watanabe, who presented his own womenswear line under CDG in 1992, followed by a menswear collection in 2001.
