Top Shop New York Opening
On April 2nd, we will witness the birth of the first US Top Shop boutique – in New York. Yay to New Yorkers but sad for the rest of us. Hehe. But anyway, at least that’s a good start. Or is it not? Well, perhaps a lot of Americans are deprived of Top Shop stuff – like they have to go to London just to be able to buy Top Shop stuff – thus all the hype. Lucky me, I’ve been shopping at Top Shop when I was still in the Philippines because there are a couple of branches there. That’s why I wasn’t entirely excited when Top Shop announced it was branching out here in the US. Ugh… it really pays to live in New York – the sample sales, the freebies, the accessible brands, the tourist spots, the Serendipity cafe… oh and home of Gossip Girl and other fave movies and TV shows!

And speaking of more Top Shop, more freebies, and more of New York, this was what I was reading last Wednesday:
Spotted at the corner of St. Marks Place near Third Avenue: A truck that says “Everybody Loves Topshop” with a woman giving away gift cards for up to $500. The store opens April 2 — one week from tomorrow — and this is possibly the best store-opening promotion ever. We’re not sure how long it will last, but we suggest you put on your sneakers and start running.
Can you believe it? Topshop giving away up to $500 gift cards to promote the store opening this 2nd of April? I envy the people of New York! It really pays to live there! Topshop is just too generous to be giving away gift cards for their opening! It’s just like giving away their stuff on opening day… not to mention that Sir Philip Green will be there himself and we’re hearing Kate Moss and Lady Gaga will be there too. So with all this hype, do you think Top Shop will or will not disappoint?
For months Topshop has been teasing us senseless. First, Sir Philip Green promised the Soho store would open in October ‘08. Then it was March. Then April. And it actually caught fire in January! Finally, after almost a year-and-a-half since rumors about Sir Philip signing a lease for the first New York outpost surfaced, the fast-fashion mecca will open its doors on Broadway and Spring on April 2. But after all these torturous weeks, will the store deliver? Can anything live up to that level of anticipation? Yes, Topshop is amazing and the London flagship has nearly brought us to our knees on more than one occasion. But Topshop has legitimate competitors in this city now, with the offerings at Zara and H&M improving rapidly. Also, we’ll lose the caché of wearing Topshop pieces in New York that our friends couldn’t buy. You know: “I love your dress! Where is it from?” “Topshop! In London. Where you can’t buy it. Tra la la la la!” But maybe we’re just overthinking this. Maybe Topshop can be all we’ve ever wanted it to be and more! Maybe it will be so amazing the throngs of tweens won’t even deter us from going to shop on, like, the second day it’s open. After all, the new store is supposed to have everything the London flagship has. Possibly more. We’re hearing Jonathan Saunders and Preen – could this even get any better?
